Why take a tour in winter?

I-70 between Denver and the ski resorts is notorious for weekend traffic and winter storms, and Colorado enforces traction requirements on mountain highways in snowy conditions. A tour puts a professional driver in charge, so you can spend the day on the snow instead of watching the road.

Types of winter tours

  • Ski or snowboard day: transport plus lift access and rentals. The Copper Mountain day we found (from $350, about 12 hours) includes lift and rentals per the listing.
  • Snowshoeing: the easiest way into the backcountry. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Half-day trips near Conifer start around $108; full-day trips with transport from Denver are about $145; guided snowshoeing inside Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park is about $200.
  • Snow tubing + hot springs: a great non-skier or family day ($225).
  • Breckenridge sightseeing: visit a classic ski town, cross the Continental Divide and ride the gondola. Skiing isn't included (from $137.70 on GetYourGuide).
  • RMNP in winter: snowy lakes and elk with no timed-entry permit needed off-season ($149).
  • Holiday lights: a 2-hour evening bus tour of Denver's December lights ($44).

When is ski season?

Colorado's ski season generally runs from about mid-November to April. Some high-elevation areas open in October or stay open later when snow is good. Snowshoe and tubing tours need snow cover, so operators sometimes change routes. Holiday light tours run around December.

How to choose

  • Skiers: check exactly what's included (lift ticket, rentals, lessons) and how much time you get on the mountain.
  • Non-skiers: snowshoeing or tubing gives you the snow experience without lessons.
  • Altitude: resorts sit at 9,000+ feet. Hydrate, wear sunscreen and pace yourself on day one.
  • Dress: waterproof boots, wool socks and layers; several listings recommend waterproof shoes from November to April.

Prices (checked October 11, 2026)
